Ms. Von Tran 陳群旺 was born on the 20th of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar in 1940, the Year of the Dragon. She was born in Svay Rieng, Cambodia to parents from Guangdong, China and was the eldest of seven children. Von passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on January 1st, 2026 at 12:12pm, at the age of 86 and was surrounded by her loving family.
Von married her husband, Khi Phan, in 1957 and together they raised eight children in Cambodia. In 1975, as the Cambodian War threatened their safety, the family fled and found refuge at Sông Bé Base Camp in Vietnam. During their time in Vietnam, Von gave birth to her ninth and youngest child. Together Von and Khi have three daughters and six sons. After several years in Vietnam, the family immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, on December 12th, 1985, where they began a new chapter of their lives.
In her daily life, Von found joy in exercising at home, traveling, and reading books about healthy living. She devoted hours each day to staying active and took great pride in caring for her physical well-being.
In 2017, Von moved into a downstairs suite in one of her children’s homes, where she independently cared for her husband. Following his passing in 2022, she continued to live independently, managing her own cooking, cleaning, and daily routines with strength and determination. During this time, she also reconnected with childhood friends.
On December 12th, 2025 - the 40th anniversary of her arrival in Canada - Von was admitted to Vancouver General Hospital, where she spent her final days.
Von is lovingly remembered by her nine children, fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all of whom will forever cherish her life and enduring influence.
