Young Gook So was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who will forever remain in our hearts.
Born on December 6, 1929, from Tai Bao Lai, Poon Yu, Pong Woo, Canton, China, Young Gook passed away on January 6, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by her family at Casa Mia Care Home in Vancouver, Canada.
Young Gook’s life journey began in Mui Joy Chong, a small village in China, where she married her husband Sing Kwan So, who predeceased her in 2014. In 1957, she moved to Hong Kong with her eldest son, and over the years, four more children joined the family. In 1966, Young Gook and her five children relocated from Hong Kong to Georgetown, Guyana, South America, where she and her husband built a successful Asian import business specializing in foodstuffs, figurines, porcelain vases, and furniture.
To seek a brighter future for their children, the family moved once again, in 1969, and finally settled in Vancouver, Canada. There, Young Gook lovingly raised her children, created a warm home, worked to support the family, and enjoyed her retirement with her husband traveling and exercising.
She is dearly missed by her sons David (Ella), Albert (predeceased), Peter (predeceased), and daughters Jennifer (Ali) and Rosanne (Kirk). Peter is survived by his wife Dianne. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandsons Eric (Linda), Gary, Jeffrey, Derek, and Nicholas, granddaughters Megan and Katharine, and great-grandsons Jordan and Tristan.
Young Gook's hobbies included playing Mahjong with friends, gardening, practicing Tai chi, taking walks in Central Park with her husband, and cooking Sunday dinners where the family gathered. Her strength, compassion, and love will be greatly missed.
