Mr. Yuet Chang Chui (崔越常), a deeply respected elder, loving husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully in Toronto on November 10, 2025, at the age of 99, having reached 100 in the traditional Chinese reckoning. He was born on August 26, 1926, in Haikou, Hainan Island, China.
As a young man, Mr. Chui left Hainan for Hong Kong. In 1949, political upheaval left him stranded there and forced him to start over from nothing. It was in Hong Kong that his kind, generous, and affable nature became his greatest asset, helping him build a new life and a successful, multi-faceted career. In business he was known for his honesty and goodwill, qualities that opened doors and led to opportunities such as his first solo construction project in Sha Tin (沙田半山百樂別墅). Aside from land development, Mr. Chui found success in groceries, dry cleaning, restaurants (常樂大酒樓 in Los Angeles), and property management. Above his achievements in business, Mr. Chui measured success by the
strength of his family. He married his beloved wife, Yip Shou Ping (葉秀萍), on June 18, 1957, and together they raised four children. He worked tirelessly to afford them opportunities he never had himself, paving the way for their higher education in the United States and Canada. In his later years, Mr. Chui retired first to Vancouver, Canada, before following his son, Leo, to Toronto. Those years were filled with simple joys: practicing Chinese calligraphy, appreciating Chinese art, traveling the world, and spending time with family and friends. He never liked to eat alone and delighted in gathering people around a table, sharing good food, good drink,
and lively conversation with those he held dear. Rooted in his Taoist beliefs, Mr. Chui approached life with humility, balance, and gratitude, accepting change with quiet strength. His family will honor his memory according to traditional Taoist customs.
Mr. Chui lived a long and fulfilled life, overcoming adversity and never letting it dull his shining personality. He will always be remembered for his infectious laugh, generosity, kindness, and for the steady, reassuring presence he brought to everyone around him.
He is survived by his wife, Shou Ping; his four children, Wendy, Vivian, Alison, and Leo; and his grandchildren, Alexander, Roland, Molly, and Carmen. He will be dearly missed, forever remembered, and loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
