Elsie Mae Hoseney Grooms, 88, of Vancouver passed away September 2, 2014 at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. Her last moments, before she slipped away on August 31st, were spent in her beloved garden. She was born October 26, 1925 in Ferndale, Washington to George and Ingeborg Asper.
At a young age, Elsie and her family moved to Battle Ground, where she graduated from high school in 1943. She loved social events and usually was heavily involved in organizing all the class reunions. She was a member of the Sons of Norway, and had held the offices of Treasurer and Secretary. She was also a former member of the Minnehaha Grange.
Elsie enjoyed volunteering. Over the years she did volunteer work for PeaceHealth SW Medical Center, the Democratic Party and at Minnehaha Elementary as a reading tutor. She was a master gardener and loved sewing, music and cooking. Elsie had a bit of a sweet tooth and loved baking pies and “grandma” buns. She also canned fruit from her yard. Her last sewing project was making a coat for her great granddaughter, Kayla. As an avid traveler, she made many trips to Norway and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Her travels also took her to Europe and South America.
Elsie contributed to every charity she felt was worthy of her time and money. She wanted to make the world a better place however she could.
Elsie is survived by her children, Kristina Deckard, Peter (Susan) Hoseney, Martha (Bryan) Olson, Debra (Ron) Codemo; grandchildren, Jason (Angela) Hoseney, Kerri ( Ben) Sheragy, Cyrus Hoseney and Elizabeth (Kathy Morris) Hoseney; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Nicholas, Jaden, Luke and Kayla; sister, Hazel Smith; and her kitty, Henrietta. She is preceded in death by her son, Paul Hoseney; sister, Bernice Barker; and brother, Arnold Lowe.
A celebration of life for Elsie will be 1:00pm, Saturday, September 13th at the Sons of Norway Lodge, 2400 Grant St., Vancouver, WA 98660.
