Eugene Edward Pomplitz was born September 13, 1924, at Sellwood General Hospital in Portland, Oregon, to Orlando Henry Pomplitz and Hazel Pearl McKay Pomplitz. After graduating from Stevenson High School, in Stevenson, Washington, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving four years in the European Theatre of Germany and France, first as a cadet/pilot and then in the Engineering Department.
Gene worked 43 years as a plumbing foreman/superintendant for Urban Plumbing and Heating and Lord Brother’s Contractors. He oversaw all plumbing when Portland’s Providence Hospital was built, and later remodeled. He was involved in the building of Vancouver Memorial Hospital, various schools in Portland and Vancouver, and was superintendant of plumbing and heating during construction of Portland’s Memorial Coliseum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Orlando Pomplitz, and his beloved wife, Virginia Cohen Pomplitz, originally of Concord, North Carolina. He was a lifelong student of the Columbia River, living on it his entire life, and had fond memories of fishing and hiking along its shore.
Gene and Ginny enjoyed cross country travel to North Carolina to visit relatives and loved living in the Great Northwest and spending time with wonderful neighbors. Gene believed the best advice he could give people was “to be honest, faithful, and true to those who know you and love you.”
