

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Daniel M. Balascio at his winter home in Port Charlotte, Fl. Dan was just days away from his 94th birthday, being born on December 3, 1931. He was born in Albany, NY to the late Nicholas & Mary Fuina Balascio, and spent his early years in Albany. In addition to Port Charlotte, he was a resident of Defreestville, NY. Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Bonesteel Balascio, and his children, Daniel (Jennifer) Balascio, Jr. of Falls of Rough, KY and Susan Flanagan of Manchester, VT. He is the proud grandfather to Jessica Balascio, Christina (Gaylord) Davidson, Nicholas (Monica) Balascio, and Madeleine, Daniel III, Jillian, and Shea Flanagan as well as 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his nephews, Mark and John Balascio and several cousins. Dan was predeceased by his brother Augustine (Dona) Balascio and nephew Gerard Balascio.
Dan was a graduate of Vincentian Institute, Albany and Siena College in Loudonville. He served his country in the US Navy during the Korean conflict, stationed in Japan. Dan was employed by the NYS Dept of Labor for 34 years, retiring in 1991.
Dan spent many wonderful years at his family camp on Friends Lake in the Adirondacks. He was an avid sportsman. As a golfer, he received a hole-in-one award from Amsterdam Municipal. He was passionate about fishing and continued to fish at Starbuck Dam in Chestertown every summer. In the Winter, Dan was a hunter and downhill skier. He skied the mountains of NY, New England, as well as the Swiss Alps. Dan earned a 2nd place trophy while in the O.C. Ski Club.
Dan & Barbara drove cross country in their motor home 4 times. They drove to Alaska twice, once for 9 weeks and the second time for 7 weeks. Also, he spent 10 days in Alaska fishing day and night with his son. Other travels included Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, a transatlantic cruise and many cruises to the Caribbean. For the past 30 winters, Dan & Barbara enjoyed the friends, many activities, and the sunshine at the Village of Holiday Lake in Port Charlotte.
Dan was an active 93-year-old up until the day before he was diagnosed with kidney failure and hospitalized for just a few weeks prior to his death.
Services will be held in the Spring at the Gerald B. Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga County.
