
John, Johnny or Uncle Johnny, as he was known to family, was born on Sept 29, 1944 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the 4th of 10 children born to Mike and Mary (Roach) McNeil. He passed away on Friday, Dec 26th, 2025 at the age of 81, in North Port, FL.
Johnny attended Waltham High School after coming over to Massachusetts from Canada. He worked many jobs as a young man, eventually settling into a career of mainly carpentry and building maintenance. John worked for Digital Equipment Corporation in Massachusetts for over 25 years and was a skilled carpenter and craftsman. John loved to play cards, cribbage, and recently BINGO had become his latest forte. He was also an avid sports fan who watched baseball and football every season, rooting on the Pats and Red Sox for every game he could. John traveled around the US for many years, living in different states like NM, Florida, Maine and Massachusetts. He was living in Florida at the time of his death. He was a lover of the ocean and deep sea fishing.
John was a quiet man until he got to know you. But once you got a smile out of him, you knew you were “in”. And those blue eyes!
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Mike & Mary McNeil, his sisters Mary Stewart and Janet Wallett, and a brother Melvin; his 1st wife Esther Daugman.
John was married to Johanna Burnett at the time of his death. She currently resides in Lakewood, NY. John was previously married to Liz Friend & Esther McNeil. He is survived by his daughters Christine Cunningham, Amy (Jeff) Abel, Dawn (Alicia) Kiser, and Erin (Amber) Cogoli; grandchildren Michael and Adam Cunningham; Taidhen, Aibhlin, Isla, Cadhla, and Raegan Abel; Jacob Maliff, and Acacia Taul; and Kadence Silva; as well as two great-grandsons Emmett and Zachary Cunningham; numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
Per his wishes, he will be cremated and interred at a later date. A celebration of his life will be held at that time. In his memory, family and friends are welcome to donate to a local animal shelter or Humane Society.
