It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marlin D. Harris, of Rotonda West, Florida, who peacefully left this world on November 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 84. Marlin was cherished by all who knew him—remembered for his gentle spirit, steady presence, and the quiet strength that shaped his life.
Born on September 13, 1941, in Double Springs, Alabama, Marlin grew into a person deeply committed to his family, friends, and community.
After graduating from high school, Marlin joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961, proudly serving his country until 1966, including time spent during the Vietnam War. His dedication to service did not end when his military career did—Marlin remained active with the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), continuing to support fellow veterans and honor those who served.
Following his military service, Marlin resided in Chicago, Illinois, where he owned and operated a successful business. His strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to quality made his business well regarded in the community. After many years of hard work, he eventually retired to Rotonda West, Florida, where he enjoyed a peaceful and fulfilling life.
Marlin also had a lifelong love and passion for golf. Known affectionately among friends as a “boring golfer,” he earned the title because he always hit the ball straight and down the middle—a skill that brought smiles, good-natured teasing, and admiration from those who played alongside him. Time on the course brought him joy, peace, and meaningful camaraderie.
For the past 20 years, Marlin was fortunate to travel the globe with his beloved Jean, creating cherished memories across countless destinations. Their adventures took them from Asia to Panama, and to many other remarkable places, filling their lives with wonder, joy, and unforgettable experiences.
A service honoring Marlin’s life will be held on December 15th at 10:00 AM at Kay’s-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home in Venice, followed by a ceremony at Sarasota National Cemetery with full military honors at 12:30 PM. All who knew him are invited to gather, remember, and celebrate the remarkable life he lived.
Marlin will be dearly missed, but his legacy—rooted in love, character, and unwavering devotion—will continue to shine in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
