Ed and Sue met on January 2, 1965 when he was 18 and she was 15. On February 6, 1965 Ed asked Sue to marry him. He married the love of his life, Sue, on March 22, 1967 when he was 20 and Sue was 17. They were married 3 months when Ed was sent to Vietnam.
They were both active in prayer & marriage ministry in several of the Churches they attended through the years. Ed loved his job as Water Department Superintendent for the City of Maumee, Ohio for 15 years. Prior to that he was the village administrator of Delta, OH for many years.
He retired to the Florida Keys and became active in The Keys Vineyard Church, where they asked him to be assistant headmaster of the school, and he also served as assistant pastor. He had a great love for people.
Ed’s favorite pastime after retirement was spending time on their boat, fishing in the Keys. He had many 'fishing stories' and he loved to share them with anyone who was interested. His goal was to make people laugh. In later years, he looked forward to travel adventures and enjoyed 19 cruises with his wife. They also traveled to England, Scotland, and Sweden for their 50th anniversary. To mark their 57th anniversary, they embarked on a transatlantic cruise. They visited the Azores, France, England, and the Netherlands.
He was a proud US Army veteran and a lifelong member of the VFW.
Ed leaves behind his wife, Linda Sue Smith (Proudfoot), his precious dog Gracie, his son Christopher (Danielle) Smith of Port Charlotte, Fl., and his daughter Heather (Jeff) Snow of Walbridge, Oh.. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Walter & Helen, brother David, and sister Karen. He had 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Ed & Sue also have God Children in Texas, John & Shelly Auzenne and their children Kaiden, Ava & Aramen.
Ed was passionate about his love for Jesus, which gives his family comfort in the time of such immense loss because we know we will all be together again someday.
In honor of his service to his Lord JESUS Christ and the U.S Armed forces, we will be doing a celebration of life at the VFW Post 10178550 N. McCall Rd. Englewood, FL, on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 1 to 4 p.m.
