

Yoshio Akiyama was born October 4, 1930, in Orange County, California to Kichiro and
Yukio Akiyama. Yosh was the 6th of 8 children.
Children: Ben, Dorothy, George, Hanae, Mas, Yosh, Sam and Yeichi.
With the signing of Executive Order 9066, the US government gave them 48 hours to
move out of Ocean Side, California, or be placed into an internment camp. In March of
1942 the Akiyama family relocated to Colorado in an old, beat-up pickup truck.
Once in Colorado, Yosh attended Libby School in Welby and Adams City High School
in Adams County.
Yosh joined the Navy in 1950, served until 1954, where he received early discharge due
to his father’s death. Yosh met Sumi Tawara in 1950 and they married on October 30, 1952.
Yosh had a passion for fishing, bowling, gardening, gambling, traveling and watching
his children compete in sports. He also enjoyed his grandchildren’s sporting events and
other activities.
Yosh is survived by wife Sumi, and brothers Mas (Aki) and Sam Akiyama.
Children: Sharon (Mitch), Linda (Melvin), Cindy (Gary), Glenn (Linda) and Dave (Teresa).
Grandchildren: Summer, Craig, Nicole, Michelle and Justin.
Great-grandchildren: Abby, Min, Emma, Rafe and Sophia.
Service will be at noon Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Holiday Bowling and Billiards
10350 W. Colfax Ave. Lakewood, CO 80215 celebration of life will follow the service,
food will be provided and bowling. Please dress casual. We will stream the service via Zoom.
