Al leaves behind son, Pete of Ventura, Ca. Daughter Karen and grandsons Travis and Jared Toogood of Michigan. Al was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy and Son-in-law Dave Toogood.
Al was born in London, England on July 25, 1930 to Fred and Gladys Freeman.
What began as an innocent meeting at a cousin's wedding led to a life long adventure with Al and Dorothy, marrying on Sept. 1, 1956. They began their new life by immigrating to Canada in 1957, via ship, then motorcycling 16 days from Quebec to settle in Victoria, B.C. Canada. It was there that they started their own family with the births of Karen and Pete. The adventure continued in 1962 when the family moved to Southern California.
Al spent his working career in the printing field. As a young man he began in print shops in and around London. After their move to Ventura he worked at the Star-Free Press and eventually retired from the Oxnard Press-Courier in the mid 80's.
Mom and dad spent their social hours with friends at B.E.A.R club events in Ventura and Oxnard.
After raising their family they retired to Nanaimo, B.C. Canada in 1986 where they were among the founding members of the Nanaimo British Club. Al enjoyed the time spent with the "family" they had at the clubs.
Alan's passion was soccer. Beginning as a boy in war torn England in the 30's and continuing to the U.S., where he spent many years coaching and refereeing youth soccer in Ventura and surrounding areas. Al was one of the founding members of AYSO in Ventura and was always amazed how large it had grown.
After Dorothy's passing in 2007, dad returned to Ventura to be close to son Pete, moving to the Venturan. Here he met many wonderful caregivers who again became his "family". He moved to the Californian in 2013.
Pete and Karen want to thank the "family" that surrounded dad in every facet of his life.
Heartfelt thanks go to all his wonderful caregivers. We can never express how grateful we are and have been for your love and caring of our precious Dad.
A memorial service for Al will be held on Tuesday, July 8 at 3pm at Charles Carroll Funeral Home.
