She was a resident of the city of Ventura for 62 years.
Barbara was born in San Francisco on January 22nd, 1925, to Dr. Paul and Aurelle Kinney. She spent most of her childhood in Pasadena and enjoyed many summers hiking and camping in Sequoia National Park, a place that she loved and continued to visit throughout her adult life. It was this experience that helped Barbara develop a deep love for plants, flowers and all of nature.
One of her proudest achievements was graduating from Good Samaritan Hospitals' nursing program in Los Angeles in 1947. It was there that she developed a lifelong desire to help others. She remained close friends with many of her classmates and helped organize annual reunions for them well into her 80's.
After nursing school, she attended Stanford University and graduated cum laude. While at Stanford, she met her future husband, Walter Meyer, and they were married soon after graduation.
During the summer of 1950, the newlyweds moved to Ventura to settle and raise a family. Barbara was a devoted housewife and mother to her two children before she returned to work as a school nurse for the Ventura Unified School District in 1965. She worked at most of the various elementary schools in Ventura before retiring in 1985.
For over 50 years, Barbara was a very active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road. She served as head of the church Altar Guild and embroidered many of the vestments still used today for church services. Her faith in God was very important to her.
Barbara belonged to a group of friends known as the "Knitwits". This group met regularly to knit, have lunch, and enjoy each other’s company. Many of the "Knitwits" remained her close friends for well over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter Meyer, and her daughter, Janet Smith.
Her surviving relatives include her sister Janet McKay (husband Walter); her son David Meyer (wife Shen) and grand-children Matt and Alisha; her son-in-law Dale Smith and his children Glenn Smith (wife Jaymie); Gene Smith; and Michael Smith (wife Danielle).
The family would like to thank Dr. Craig Mansour and his staff, Hospice, the Livingston Nurses, and Barbara's caregivers Myen Manning, Sally Kosub, and Chinitra Banfill for their loving care and concern for Barbara during her final months of life.
Donations can be made in Barbara's name to Foodshare of Ventura County or St. Paul's Episcopalian Church.
A memorial service to honor Barbara's life will be held on Saturday, August 18th, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road in Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura.
