
Born July 19, 1918 in Santa Barbara, he was a member of one of the founding families of Los Olivos. He worked as a park and wildland ranger and welder before going to Europe as a sergeant in the 3rd Army, 261st Field Artillery Battalion during WWII.
Upon his return, he married Pauline Janes of San Jose and they soon began their family. Bernie worked for almost 30 years as a foreman for the same oil company, which changed names from Flying A to Tidewater, then to Getty and Texaco. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and RV traveler. He loved storytelling and jokes, and he had a creative way with the English language.
He is survived by daughters, Elva Leonard (Art), Paula Tolan (David) and Sue Davis; son, Alan (Janie); eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters and by his daughter, Laura Davis-Doe (Michael Williamson).
At Bernie's request, there will be no memorial service.
