I believe I had the opportunity to serve with Buck Thomas.  We were in the same battalion, NMBC40.  I believe he told me that his father made him this small knife, with a squirrel on the antler handle.  He sold it to me, and when he was moving to his next assignment inquired if he could buy it back.  I regret it to this day, that I did not honor his request, and allow Buck to buy it back.  I would love to pass this knife and it’s hand made leather sheath back to the Thomas  family.  God rest Bucks soul, he truly always had the “can do spirit”!

I just found this today.  I am very sorry for your loss.  Buck was a great man.  He taught me work ethic.

Condolence to the bereaved family. Life indeed is too short. We were together in two commands...first in CBU 418 SUBASE Bangor, WA as Petty Officer Second Classes and then we met again in NMCB-40 as Senior Chiefs. Seabees all the way...you will be sorely missed!

Buck was an amazing man, Seabee and Leader. I had the pleasure of serving with him twice and his knowledge and personality made both tours enjoyable. Gabi and I always loved seeing Buck and Cyndee in the Reef.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of a great member of the Thomas family. Always willing to give a helping hand, Buck was someone I could always count on. He was an amazing mentor, teacher, and father figure. He helped my family out so much when my father was deployed. Buck was just an amazing person. I wish to send my condolences to the entire Thomas family, but mostly his son Josh, who lost the man he idolized. Stay strong like I know you all are.

Words cannot express all our sorrow upon learning of Buck's passing.  My deepest condolences go out to Buck's family, friends and shipmates.  I had the distinct honor and pleasure to serve with SW3 Buck Thomas in 1986 when we were young, hard-charging Seabees assigned to NMCB 40 Det Iwakuni, Japan. Our paths crossed frequently over the years and I can think of no better person than Buck to teach and mentor both young Seabees and CEC Officers in their Battalion journeys.  Some people may have to work longer and harder to muster enough good deeds to earn their way into Heaven, but others like Buck do it in a shorter time.  Buck, I was proud to know and serve with you. My memories flood of the pride I saw in Buck leading our main body team off the plane carrying their carpentry tools to get to work in GITMO, "Operation Sea Signal".  He never faltered in the hot Cuban sun. Buck, your selfless service and final sacrifice is a life well lived for family, country and the SEABEE Corp. Is there an address we can send a card to the family? Several of us here in Atlanta GA grew up with Buck.  Buck was a friend back when I lived in Winter Haven in the 80's. I made contact with him in this past year and I'm very glad I did.  He was a good friend to me back in the day and I am very saddened about his passing.  Buck was a truly good man. Buck welcomed me to the Seabees and NMCB FORTY.  Immediately we were selected and went through initiation together.  I have so many great memories with him from ignition to our deployments to Spain, Guam, and our FEXs.  He was and is a truly great Seabee, sailor, husband, father, and all around guy. In the middle of a war zone Buck wanted me to think of my family first, I think this was because that is what he did.  He was a good man and a patriot.

So many memories come to mind when I think of Buck, I don't know where to start. I always admired his quiet strength and calm demeanor, his sometimes dry, underspoken sense of humor. It was easy to see why he earned everyone's respect and admiration. Then there was the fun Buck, with his cigar and Johnny Walker, out cleaning fish in the back yard in Florida. He was so loving and gentle with any child he came in contact with, especially his own. He was such a great father. I could tell the first time I met him (even though we were all so sick that Christmas) that his children and Cyndee were everything to him. He showed that in everything he did. I'm grateful for his example of being present and involved when he was deployed or away. I want to say so much more, but nothing I could say would capture the depth of your loss. Just know Scott and the boys and I will always be here for you.

You were an inspiration and a wonderful man! I am glad that my husband worked under you command. You helped my family through some dark times and you always had a smile on your face. We will miss  you!

I am very sorry for your loss. Your husband touched a lot of lives, mine being one of them. Arriving to 40 as a new Chief Buck took time to mentor me and push me hard to be a better Chief. I know that he is running ops up there and Chiefing Hard and making things happen. He was tough but had a great heart. He loved his Family and his Seabees. We all mourn his passing but celebrate that we were able to spend part of the brief time he spent here with him. Our prayers are with you and the family.

Buck, Cyndee and thier kids moved into our FL neighborhood and became the best friends/neighbors anyone could ever ask for.  Buck would bring Kaitlyn home from daycare at NAS JAX, he had a Gator sticker on his dashboard and if he had a cut he would tease Kait and tell her the Gator bit him.  She is now almost 13 and still remembers those rides and all the time she spent at Cyndee and Bucks house.  He and Cyndee both always made Kait feel like she was part of their family and I'm so grateful for that today and feel so blessed this entire family was brought into our lives.  We miss them terribly and will greatly miss Buck. I'm glad we did make two trips to CA to visit because we have some great memories that we will always look back on. I'm so sorry we were unable to make the trip.  May God bless all of you and Buck RIP you are and were an awesome husband, father and friend. Thank you for all those years of Service.
