God called Donald E. Klein to his heavenly home Tuesday, September 7, 2010, following a lengthy illness. Don was born February 17, 1925 in Seattle, Wash., to Mirle and Robert Klein, and moved with his parents to Burbank at age three.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Boatswain Mate 1st Class during World War II. Following his service, he worked eight years for the government fire department at China Lake N.O.T.S. The family moved to Ventura in 1953, when he joined the fire department. He received his B.S. degree in fire science and worked his way up to captain, serving at most of the city fire stations, retiring after 23 years of service.
He was respected for his integrity and faithfulness by all who came in contact with him.
In 1944, Don married the love of his life, Bette Gaston, and they shared 65 years together.
He will be forever missed as a beloved husband, father, friend and companion, and is survived by his beloved Bette; sons, Douglas, and daughter-in-law, Barbara, Steven, and daughter-in-law, Pam, and George; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, who loved and adored him.
The family wishes to thank the Livingston Memorial Hospice caregivers for their compassionate care and service.
At Don’s request, no services will be held.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Condolences may be left at www.tedmayrfuneralhome.com.
