Donna Jean Barr

Our warm, sweet and kind-hearted mother, Donna Jean Barr, 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Ventura on May 9, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was a devoted wife and mother and a gracious hostess to family and friends over the years. She will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Barr was born January 23, 1933 in Oxnard. She was the only child of Donald Scot McPherson and Helen Ann Singleton. Her family lived in Santa Paula at the time of her birth, but later moved to Ventura. Mrs. Barr graduated from Ventura High School in 1950 and married Ted Leroy Barr on December 31 the same year. Her husband preceded her in death on February 8, 2005.

After high school, Mrs. Barr worked as a secretary at the Port Hueneme Naval Base until she was six months pregnant with her first daughter. Around 1959 she worked alongside her husband at Barr’s Bakery, a business started in 1926 by Ted’s grandfather, Albert Barr. She was the cake decorator until they sold the business in December 1962. In 1978, she began working for the County of Ventura in several different positions. Mrs. Barr retired while working at the Government Center in 1992. Her husband also retired the same year from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Dept. Mrs. Barr was a deaconess in her church and was also the church pianist for many years.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Lee Stoll of Everett, Wash., Paula and Marv Wegner of Altadena, and Julie Childs of Ventura; grandchildren, Zachary and Melissa Wegner of San Dimas, Sam and Leah Wegner of Ventura, Hannah Wegner of Portland, Ore., and Jason Childs of Ventura; great-grandchildren, Abigail (4), Ashly (2), and Jesse Wegner (9mo) of Ventura; brother-in-law, Neal Barr of Camarillo; and close family friend, John Christie.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Ted Mayr Funeral Home.

A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 16, Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura.
