Florence Josephine Rhoads
Florence was born in Wellington, TX, in 1918 to Carl and Flora Rhodes. She passed away peacefully on June 1, 2012, her 94th birthday. She was at home surrounded by family.
Florence was raised on a small cotton farm in the Texas panhandle. Unfortunately, she was a city girl born on a farm. Soon after high school she moved into town to attend school and work. There she was introduced to Robert, a soldier, with the same last name (Rhoads, Rhoades). After only a few dates, they were married in early 1943 before Robert was deployed to the South Pacific. Following WWII they moved to Kansas. They began to raise a family, and eventually both became school teachers. In 1955 they moved to Whittier, CA where they continued their teaching careers. Florence retired from the Lowell Joint School District in 1979. In 1989, following the death of her husband, she moved to Ventura to be closer to her children.
Florence was an excellent seamstress and made most of her own clothing. She was a prolific quilter and loved to embroider, knit and crochet. She and Robert loved the adventure of travel, both abroad and throughout the U.S., and she continued to travel after moving to Ventura.
She is survived by her three children Carl Rhoads and wife Kathy of Ventura, Lynda Howland and husband John of Windsor, CA, Robert Rhoads and wife Deanne of Thousand Oaks; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rhoads, and two grandchildren, Nicholas Rhoads and Alicia Howland.
