Was just thinking about the Carpers today. Saw Gene's obit, sorry to hear. 

I understand, my mom and dad are both gone, I have fond memories of our families in Colorado.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember when we visited when I was only 13 and Gene took the time to start teaching me how to rope. He gave me a rope that I still have, that was so nice of him.

some of my fondest memories of Gene were talking with him on the front porch when he sat there in the afternoons.  He was a kind man and enjoyed talking about the VFW.  He tried to get my dad to go with him but dad isn't much for meetings. Gene has a great family.  I was lucky to go to high school with them. Diana my prayers go out for you and your family. I'm so sorry to hear of Gene's passing.  It was 39 years ago that I met the Carper family at church and KK was my kids babysitter.  My prayers to the family.  I think of you all often and remember the good times we had.

Gene live around the corner from us.
When we were on our walks we would look for him sitting on his porch or down his driveway in the shade. Many times he would see us first and would  say hello. Sometimes we would stop to chat. We knew him for 10 yrs. 
He will be greatly missed.

 Gene Carper loved his family and was a good man. He was also a far better cowboy than alot of people know. At times he would impart his wisdom to me about horses and cattle and to those few that could read between the lines and take time to listen. He was one of those "real deal" undiscovered cowboys that new an imposter when he saw one and wasn't afraid to call them on it. My late grandfather and he were good buddies who met about once a week to swap tall tales and impart sacred cowboy knowledge to one another. Gene knew more about quarter horse bloodlines than any man I have ever met and knew a good horse and cowboy when he saw one because he was one. I still have his roping chute and roping dummy in my arena and will forever have the knowledge of horses he ever so slowly imparted to me. If he didn't take a liking to you, at best you might get the time of day.He was the kind of friend who would show up at your door unannounced with something in his truck to help you out with whether you needed it or not (just like my grandfather). So I assume he somewhat approved of me. I understood Gene because I was partially raised by my grandfather who was much the same-old school Oklahoma,Kansas cowboys-few words-alot of wisdom and a quirky cowboy sense of humor that most people that didn't know them would be insulted by. "Mean Gene" wasn't really mean he was humorously awnry in an old school cowboy sort of way. I always got a great kick out of him-he made me smile inside and laugh a little when no one else in our group understood him but me and a couple of others.He would cut you down build you back up and make an odd joke out of it all in one statement and most people wouldn't know what hit them. I loved that guy. He was the only living person who could still remind me of my grandfather and now he is gone to heaven. He was my friend and I am thankful that I was able to ride and rope with him.His life will be celebrated every time we open his roping chute. He will be greatly missed.  Mark Mahnken and family.

Daddy is saddened by the news of Gene passing. He admired Gene's horsemanship. I remember the story you recently shared about his long time horse he loved so much and the impact of that loss to him. He had a big heart for his great friend, his horse. Hope you have lots of pictures to share with the grandchildren and great grands. Daddy is thinking of all of you.
