Lu was born in New York City on December 22, 1931. Although she lost her father at the age of three, she soon found a loving father in her mother’s second husband Godfrey “Pete” Willis, who loved and raised Lu as his daughter.
Lu was an Alumni of Cornell University, where she met her husband of 48 years, Pete Farmer. Early in their marriage, Pete’s work in the military and CIA, moved the family various places around the country; eventually they settled in McLean, Virginia in the suburbs outside Washington D.C. In the mid-60’s, Lu started working as a typist for the Georgetown University Summer School and was quickly promoted to Assistant to the Dean. In Virginia, Lu also started her most loved hobby, horseback riding.
Lu unfortunately had to give up the job she loved at Georgetown when the family moved to Ventura in 1971. She worked as an Executive Secretary for R.J. Reynolds and later the Western Flood Service until her retirement in the 1990’s. Lu also rode at Foxfield Riding School in Westlake Village, where she obtained her own beloved horse, Leo. Lu took two fantastic international horseback treks with her daughter in Spain and Scotland.
Lu loved her friends and family and family get togethers and hosted many a birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. She was also a sports fan, being loyal to the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Dodgers. Lu was a talented gardener as well; tending to her husband’s orchids with care for years after his passing. Lu also enjoyed mystery novels, classical and classic rock music, as well as sci-fi and fantasy fiction. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church for years and participated in the quilting and prayer shawl knitting groups. She spent more than 15 years volunteering with the Ventura Police Department in her retirement. Lu will be fondly remembered for her generosity, kindness and compassion, and humorous and loving spirit.
Lu was preceded in death by her husband, Pete in 1999. She is survived by her children, Lynne Bjornstrom, Paul Farmer, Susan Farmer, Matthew Farmer (Judy); and grandchildren, Brian Farmer, Roxanna Bosland (Mike), Daniel Farmer (Gloria), Heather Bjornstrom and Kevin Bjornstrom.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life. Services will take place on Friday, September 14, 2018, 1:00 pm, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 196 N. Ashwood Avenue, Ventura.
In lieu of flowers, Lu asked that contributions be made to Doctors without Borders.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
