Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend Mary Jeannene Gloisten passed away July 31, 2010 of Leukemia at UCLA Medical Center. Mary was born in Cherry Valley, New York on 1/1/1933. Mary grew up in Tarrytown, New York attending Washington Irving High School and St. Vincent’s School of Nursing where she received her RN degree. In 1957 she married Lt. Robert Shaffo a pilot in the Marine Air Corps who was killed in an accident in less than a month of their wedding. Mary’s son Robert from their marriage preceded her in death in 1987. Mary was blessed with another chance at love marrying Donald Gerard Gloisten in 1959 and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mary moved from New York to California and worked as a Registered Nurse and Nursing Supervisor at Encino Hospital. She received a Bachelors Degree in Nursing and created the Nursing Institute of Continuing Education providing continuing education classes for Registered Nurses. She later became Chief Financial Officer of her husband's business GBS Financial, retiring when her son Gerard moved the headquarters of the firm to Santa Rosa California. Originally a weekender to their family beach house in Ventura, Mary became a permanent resident in 1997 when her husband moved his office to Ventura. Mary enjoyed many wonderful trips with her husband traveling the world. She also had a passion for bridge and played regularly with several groups in Ventura. Mary served on the Board of Directors of Northridge Hospital for ten years and as Chairman of the Board for four years from 2004 to 2008 and has been an active member of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Ventura.
Mary follows into heaven two of her brothers, Wesley See and William See. Mary is survived by her husband Donald Gloisten, four children, Gerard Paul Gloisten of Santa Rosa CA (wife Susan), Regina O’Flock of Grants Pass OR (husband Jerry), Bernadette Jeffery of Huntington Beach CA (husband Rob), and Donald Gloisten JR of Encino CA, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two surviving brothers, Jack See and Arthur See.
Our dear Mary always showed an uplifting and passionate face to all she knew and loved. We will always remember Mary as our ambassador of goodwill, our loving mother and wife, our compassionate nurse and our oracle when it came to helpful decisions or directions.
A memorial mass will be conducted in several weeks at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Ventura for family and friends who will be notified in advance. In lieu of flowers we suggest a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
