With heavy hearts the family of Richard Alvin Davis, of Oxnard and Camarillo, announces his passing on January 15, 2013, at the age of 94. Known as Dick by friends and family, he was a gentleman with a generous nature, and whose sense of hospitality will be missed by all who knew him. Born and raised in Port Hueneme, he often recalled happy memories of his youth there with friends and family. Dick kept in touch with many of his childhood friends for his entire life. He enjoyed learning about local history and sharing it with his family.
Dick served in the Army Air Force in World War II and was stationed in Tunisia where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and worked as a cryptographer. He was proud of his service and spoke fondly of memories of his experiences in Tunisia. In 1941 he met his future bride, Georgia Hougaard (passed away September 3, 2011), in Salt Lake City, Utah. After World War II ended, they were married on April 4, 1946, and shared 65 years together. They raised their family in Oxnard. Dick provided for his family with his skill and talent as a sheet metal worker and artist. He was truly a Renaissance man. During his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and painting. Dick often went on local outings seeking inspiration with other artist friends. His family count themselves as lucky to have so many of his beautiful paintings to share and enjoy as a way of remembering him.
Dick is survived by his five children and their spouses: Storrow and Wayne Johnson, Kathy and Bill Mitchell, Mike and Judy Davis, Ann and Steve Kimbrell, and Leslie and Pete Peterson. He is also survived by 16 grand and great-grandchildren and their families: Leah (Johnson) and Richard Rzeszutek, David and Christina Johnson, Erin (Mitchell) Chaktar, Alex Mitchell, Lara Mitchell and David Murakami, Matt and Jenn Davis and their daughter Layla, Ryan and Nikola Davis and their daughters Winter and Mabel, Emily (Peterson) and Steve Reeves and their children Abigail and Ryan, Katie Peterson, Scott Kimbrell and Wesley Kimbrell.
The family would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the hospice staff members who helped take care of Dick: Nurse Nanci of Assisted Hospice, caregivers Elsa, Mina, Rocio, Gonzlo and “Juanito.”
Dick will be laid to rest at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Rd. in Ventura on January 26, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you share your memories of Dick at the online guest book at www.TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
