Guido Hentschel was born in Berlin Germany, February 28, 1937. Surviving WWII alongside his six siblings and his mother, while his father was a POW, Guido learned how to survive from a young age. Guido apprenticed as a brick layer in Berlin as a young man before he immigrated to Canada in July 1959 and began a new chapter in his life.
Guido was a ceramic tile and marble layer for most of his profession, working in large developments and hotels. Guido’s initials GH can be found at the bottom of the pool in the Vernon Lodge where he secretly laid the letters when the hotel underwent renovations in the early 1980s.
Guido eventually retired and moved back to Vernon after working in the lower mainland for many years. Guido enjoyed his yard and was always working on a project. He could be found having a beer under his maple tree in the late afternoons after tackling chores in his yard and field. He loved to host bonfires in his backyard and have the family gather together.
Guido is survived by his daughter Lisa (Jeremy), granddaughters Hadley and Esme, and his daughter-in-law Shay and granddaughter Amelia. He is predeceased by his son David (2023). Guido was extremely proud of his family and adored his granddaughters. Guido is also survived by his long-term partner Christel, his niece and nephew Patricia and Theron, and in Germany two sisters Isa and Oda and extended family.
Guido’s strength and survivor instinct was apparent as he managed to live for years after kidney cancer and metastatic lung cancer and then grieved the loss of his son who was his best friend. He passed away peacefully in the late evening of December 29th while in care at Heron Gove in Vernon.
Guido’s laugh and vibrant energy will be missed, as he was often called the “life of the party”. Guido was a generous and kind father and Opa. You will be deeply missed, Dad.
