We are deeply saddened to share that Helen Lima Middelkamp passed away peacefully at Kelowna General Hospital on December 1, 2025, with her son Graem by her side. Helen was the beloved wife of Wayne Middelkamp, with whom she shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. She was the cherished mother of Graem (Lydia), Janel (Jason), and Elena (Adrian), and a devoted Grammy to 16 grandchildren who brought her endless joy. Helen doted over her grandchildren during every visit, hosting tea parties, reading stories, playing games, and preparing meals.
Born in 1945 in North Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Helen grew up in a large, loving family. Though she left the Island in 1967 to pursue nursing in Long Beach, California, she remained a proud Cape Bretoner at heart, keeping close ties with her family. Helen had the “gift of the gab”, retaining parts of her charming east coast accent throughout her life.
During her nursing training, Helen met the love of her life, Wayne. Together they journeyed from California to Vancouver before settling in Kelowna, where they raised their family. Helen had extraordinary energy and was very active in the community. She gained lifelong friendships that endured through every stage of her life, including her recent hospitalization, where her friends provided unwavering support to her and her family.
Helen was a bright light—her infectious joy, love for life, and devotion to family and friends are an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic whose faith was an integral part of her daily life. Her dedication to her faith sustained her during challenging times.
Helen leaves behind her loving family and friends whose lives were made better for having known her. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered.
