Joan was born and raised by her parents alongside her brother, Ken, in St. Lambert, Quebec (suburb of her adored Montreal). She was also very close with her three cousins, Brian, Betty and Peggy, who were like a second set of siblings to her.
She began her teaching education at McDonald College of McGill University and graduated from Lakehead University with her Bachelor of Arts Degree. Joan achieved her teaching diploma in St. Anne De Bellevue, Quebec.
With her beloved Bob, Joanie lived in several ski towns across the Laurentians, the Eastern Townships in Quebec as well as in Thunder Bay, Ontario while teaching along the way. Together, as husband and wife, they spent many summers with her family at their cottage in Bolton Centre, Quebec.
In 1977, Joan and Bob moved to Vernon, BC seeking bigger mountains. Here they raised their two kids, Ken and Tori. Joan taught both at West Vernon and Ellison Elementary for the rest of her teaching career.
Besides teaching, Joan's passions lay in her lifelong love of ballet and dance. Skiing, hiking, gardening, and being a part of many book clubs also brought her much joy. Joanie cherished her friendships in the Okanagan as well as those back East. She was always known to love a good laugh amongst friends.
Most importantly, Joan adored her family. Joanie was recently predeceased by her husband, Bob, her true love and companion through life. Her children, Ken and Stacey and Tori and Paul, treasured her for her wisdom, support and unconditional love. "Nan" was held dear by her grandchildren, Blake, Brady, Noah, Matthew and Nicola. Joan was an attentive grandmother who kept involved in their interests and enjoyed hearing their thoughts through conversation.
Joan is survived by her children and grandchildren, as well as her brother, Ken, his wife, Beth, (Ottawa) and niece, Allison (Newark, New Jersey). All of us will miss her.
“Mom” valued meaningful, intimate gatherings with family and friends. At her request, there will be no formal service. A small gathering will be planned at a later date. Until that time, Joan would want friends to raise a glass on her behalf.
Joan was well loved and loved well.
