August 11, 1921 - January 28, 2017
Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and teacher.
Mourned by Ruth (Palmer), his loving wife of 73 years, and his children David (predeceased in 2014) (Judith), Don (Andrea), Gerry (Linda) and Barbara (Laurie) and their families.
During WWII Dad was a flight instructor in the Air Force, based in Trenton, where he met Mum. He was the recipient of the OBE Medal for saving a pilot's life while stationed at the Toronto Island Airport. After the war ended, Dad went to UBC to get his teaching certificate and later his B.Ed.
Dad taught Industrial Arts in Vernon Secondary schools (Seaton, Fulton and Vernon Secondary) for 35 years. He also taught in Antigua, British West Indies (with Canadian International Development Agency) Lahr, Germany (with Department of National Defense) and completed his teaching career in St. Lucia, Eastern Caribbean (with CUSO). He taught thousands of boys, and a few girls, to use their hands and their heads. He was a President of the North Okanagan Teacher's Association and he wrote the Curriculum for Industrial Arts Education in British Columbia.
Stan was a Kinsman, in all meanings of the word. He built a "rocking bed" and ramps for a Polio victim, he helped to build stables for the horses at the Kin Race Track, and change rooms at Kin Beach. He also helped to build the first Trinity United Church. Stan and Ruth also hosted many memorable barn dances as fund raisers at their home at the top of 39th Avenue in Vernon.
He was always a thoughtful gentleman and could be counted on to quietly help behind the scenes. Dad taught us these things:
Take care of all of your family,
Help your friends and neighbours,
Build your community,
Lead in your profession,
Keep an eye on the far horizon.
A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity United Church in Vernon at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Stan can be made to the North Okanagan Hospice Society 3506 27 Avenue Vernon, BC V1T 1S4.
Arrangements under the direction of Vernon Funeral Home, Vernon, BC.
