Born in Victoria, he grew up in Strawberry Vale. As a young teenager he worked and lived at the Judge family Epsom Dairy Farm on Burnside Road. At age 16 he met his future wife Peg when they belonged to the 4H Beef Club. They were married in 1967 and settled in Happy Valley to raise their family.
In the late 60’s Charlie along with brother Bill and their pit crew built race cars and tore up the track at Western Speedway stock car racing #21 to many victories. It was at the track that his lifelong friendship with Gary Kershaw began. Charlie took his upholstery apprenticeship with Stan Thompson Upholstery in Victoria. He later owned and operated Bill’s Upholstery on Cloverdale Avenue. After selling the business he had a long career at Pacific Coach Lines. He was a mechanic for Bill Neill Off-Highway Logging Trucks and Dale Arden Log Hauling before starting his own successful business. Charlie Price Upholstery located in Happy Valley specialized in custom upholstery work for antique cars, sports boats, and the Canadian Coast Guard.
As a dedicated father and volunteer Charlie coached baseball for Triangle Little League for many years. He was a 50 year member, director and fundraiser for Metchosin Farmers’ Institute and longtime co-manager of the Luxton Rodeo. He was instrumental in bringing the Draft Horse Log Pull Competition to Luxton Fair with teams travelling from the BC Interior, Alberta and the USA to compete. He owned his own team of Belgian Draft horses with partner Len Shephard and did horse logging in Quesnel, Sooke and Happy Valley.
Charlie was a kind, generous, hardworking man, and a dedicated volunteer in the community. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting in his younger days and fishing in his later years. You could always count on Charlie to make time for a cold beer and a visit filled with good conversation. When he wasn’t in his shop sewing boat seats and canopies, he could be found on the water fishing. He was looking forward to launching his new 26 ft Northwest aluminum boat “Whiskey Bend“. Charlie’s greatest joy in life was his role as Grampa to Drayson, Carter and Jax. Whether playing at home or on a road trip in BC, Alberta, or Texas he attended every baseball and football tryout or game to cheer on his boys. Jax at age three was already taking “driving lessons” on the tractor learning left and right while sitting on Grampa’s knee.
Predeceased by his parents Charles and Laura Price, brother Bill, sister Joyce, son Dean, brothers-in-law Ron & Larry, he is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Peggy, daughter Brandi (Michel), son Dallas (Maranda), grandchildren Drayson (Amelia), Carter (Caity), Jax, sister-in-law Donna Hesketh, brother-in-law Grant Chidlow and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Charlie’s memory to a charity of your choice.
