David passed away suddenly June 30, 2024 in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, with his wife Gillian by his side. He will be dearly missed by his wife and her family as well as by his sisters, Mary and Jean, and extended family in North America and the United Kingdom. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Grace and his brother, Jim.
He was born and raised in California and obtained his BA from the University of California at Berkeley. He remained a proud Californian all his days. After emigrating to Canada in 1968 he worked in the University of Victoria’s McPherson Library, later obtaining a Master of Library Science from UBC. The BC Archives and Records Service employed David for many years, first as a librarian and later as an archivist. He worked as an archivist for the University of Victoria and the City of Victoria, notably organizing the records of the 1994 Commonwealth Games, a project he enjoyed very much. David loved to classify, catalogue and organize any type of collection—books, corporate papers, photos, and family genealogy. He served his church as archivist and librarian for over 30 years. He took a keen interest in baseball and Canadian football, and he admired the skill and clean play of women’s basketball and hockey. David was an avid reader of many genres, but especially enjoyed world history, ancient and modern languages, theology, and mythology.
A memorial service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria on Friday, July 19 at 10:00 am.
A donation in David’s memory may be made to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation, Our Place Society, or any wildlife charity.
