It is with deep sadness that we announce that Gary Beatty (76) passed away peacefully on March 28, 2023 with his daughters by his side. Born in Sudbury, Ontario, to Kay and Ed Beatty (Battye), he was the oldest of two children. He completed his MBA with honours at Laurentian University and married his wife of 16 years- Carol Mallett (nee Plewman), later divorcing in 1988. They lived together in Sudbury on McFarlane Lake and had two daughters. In 1977, they moved to Victoria for his new job opportunity. He worked for many years for the B.C. Government as the Director of Business and Economic Development.
Gary enjoyed a cup of Starbucks coffee, a good book (Stuart Woods a favourite), and a slice of Walter’s orange pie. He was a proud father of two daughters, and proud grandfather. He was an excellent cook; barbecue, roasts, and smoked salmon were his specialties. He was most alive in nature, enjoying canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and hunting. He loved going to the auction, researching and collecting art, and refinishing furniture. He was an avid hockey fan, and true Leaf’s and Canuck’s supporter. He loved a good Chinese buffet, more recently the #3 dish at Lin Heung’s. He had a dry sense of humour and loved a good bargain.
Family was important to dad. Without hesitation he took time off work to care for his aging parents in Ontario. He was feisty and fiercely independent, and lived life on his own terms. He continued with yearly road trips to Manitoulin Island, and enjoyed seeing his ‘favourite’ sister when she came out from Toronto to visit.
He will be forever remembered by his sister Dinah Markson (Morley) of Toronto, ON, daughter’s Tara Dyck (Myron) of Winnipeg, MB, and Robin Beatty of Sooke, BC, and grandchildren Emily and Nik, along with extended family members.
The family would like to thank the Royal Jubilee Hospital Victoria for their care and compassion.
