Gary was born on June 22, 1952 in Unity Saskatchewan. He lived in a full household with his
parents Stan and Veda, and two sisters, Judy and Corrin.
Gary’s father, Stan, was a contractor and in Gary’s youth would often bring him along to job
sites. Gary often spoke of working with heavy machinery and helping his father with plumbing
and ventilation jobs by crawling around under houses in some pretty nasty, enclosed spaces. In
these years with his father, he developed a strength of character that made him the person that
he became.
Gary’s mother Veda taught him the skills of life and passed along her wonderful sense of
humour and joy. He is predeceased by both of his parents. Gary is remembered as being hard
working, honest, and fiercely loyal.
After high school, Gary enrolled at The University Of Saskatchewan where he completed his
Bachelor of Law (LLB) in 1975. He completed his Articles and practiced in Saskatchewan.
Weather initially brought him to Victoria, but he stayed for work. Beginning his career as a
Crown Prosecutor working closely with the Saanich Police Department. Over the years Gary
practiced with Jones Emery, Pearson Kinar and Associates in partnership with Robert (Bob)
Pearson and finally at Kinar Curry Lawyers, in partnership with Beatrice (Bea) Bate. After a long
and rich career Gary retired in December of 2022.
Gary was adventurous and thrill seeking, having sky dived over 100 times. He was also a scuba
diver, and an avid golfer. He was part of a regular foursome at Cordova Bay Golf Club in its
early years, and more recently played with a large group of friends at Uplands Golf Club. Gary
had been a member of Uplands Golf Club since 1992.
Gary is survived by his Wife Ida Chan, and his Daughter, Gwyneth Kinar, and was absolutely
devoted to both. Gary and Ida met in 1990 and were married before the birth of their daughter in
1999. He was extremely proud of his daughter. He took great pleasure in supporting and guiding
her through her educational and life path. He was encouraging in her goal of attaining a career
in Law, or whatever might make her happy.
Gary had a strong and close circle of friends. He was known for his intellect, humour and quick
wit. Gary was a true and loyal friend.
He had a thirst for knowledge and in the year before his retirement had discussed doing
coursework at The University of Victoria in their School of Philosophy.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Canadian Cancer Society in his name would be appropriate.
