John was born in Toronto, Ontario and attended Ryerson Polytech for journalism and the University of Western Ontario, studying Arts. John began his long and diverse career as a newspaper reporter specializing in politics. He travelled to many parts of the world reporting on political events. After leaving journalism, John spent 3.5 years as executive assistant to the BC Provincial Minister of Transportation and Provincial Secretary. Followed by 10 years as special assistant to the Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Dave Barrett. In 1986 John retired, however saw a need to be involved in municipal politics. He served on Saanich Municipal Council for 19 years and the board of ICBC for 8 years. A member of the Canadian Commonwealth Federation Youth Club, a delegate to the NDP BC Provincial Council, and chair of the Provincial NDP Communications Committee. Political involvement was a part of John, he loved being involved.
John was an accomplished sailor and enjoyed many years on the sailboat he and Peggy called home. After 20 years on the water, John and Peggy moved to Mileva Lane in Saanich. They called home to several properties around the Capital District before anchoring at Rest Haven Lodge in Sidney. John had a great love for animals and the outdoors. He was known to seek out dogs and cats in need of rescue. He was always ready to give them a forever home.
We wish to thank the staff at Rest Haven Lodge for their care of John. Special thanks to our dear friend Paul for his great support in these last years.
Respecting John’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Rest Haven Lodge dining table fundraiser for the 3rd floor.
As John was known to say, “Cheerio”.
