1915 – 2016
June Ellen Norrington passed away Oct 28, 2016 at Beacon Hill Villa in Victoria heading into her 102nd year. Daughter of Anna and Albert Todd of Gordon Head, she was the great grand daughter of John Tod, the well-known HBC Fur Trader who became locally renowned as the first retiree in Oak Bay.
June was proud of her Victoria heritage and throughout her long life remained informed and intensely interested in Victoria’s colonial history, she had a keen intellect and avidly followed current events in newspapers and on television up until the time of her passing. June was very much a woman of today and followed new developments in many areas of interest.
June was a unique, colourful and incomparable Victoria character: boisterous, generous, intelligent, independent, animated, unruly, lively and active. She will be missed.
June loved beauty and nature. She created a beautiful home and garden on an undeveloped property on the Selkirk waterway with her husband John Norrington of Norrington’s Bakery on Cook Street. They later moved to her pioneer parent’s home at Mt. Douglas where she created and maintained a large multi-stage garden to enhance and sustain their lifestyle. They downsized to Country Park in Saanichton where John passed away in 2002 at the age of 93. A few years later June moved to Beacon Villa.
Among June’s many talents was the making of fashionable clothes and costumes. Her large and interesting collection of hand- made costumes and clothing were donated to the Victoria Costume Society.
June leaves behind her son Ross Norrington and partner, Frances Butler of Victoria, B.C., her daughter Yvonne and husband Peter Christensen of Radium Hot Springs, B.C., her great grand son, Lucas Norrington of Invermere, B.C. and her sister Virginia Griffin of Victoria, B.C.
June was predeceased by her husband John Spencer Norrington of Victoria, B.C. and grandson Miles Spencer Norrington of Invermere, B.C.
June will be interred at St. Luke’s Anglican Church Cemetery on Cedar Hill Road in June of 2017.
The family wishes to thank all the kind people at Beacon Hill Villa who cared for June in her later years. She was quite content there and appreciative of their care.
Arrangements under the direction of First Memorial Funeral Services, Victoria, BC.
