Her father, Stanley, served in the British Military while Estelle, an “Army Mom,” managed the house, home and family. Patricia was the eldest of 4 siblings. She is survived by UK siblings: Brian, Carol (The Beast), Simon (Jack the Pig) & Victoria, BC, resident and husband, Ed MacDonald.
Patricia, known to her friends as “Pat”, was predeceased by her parents, Stanley, Estelle, sibling, David and daughter, Avalon.
The family moved around during Pat’s early years, moving wherever the army required them: Oswestry, Tenby, Watchet, Manobier, Whitby, Leeds and finally Knowsley. There were fun filled times at seaside beaches where she and her siblings would frolick and play and there was post war schooling. “Schooling was something you just did back then,” explained Brian Carr.
Pat developed her leadership skills in the Girl Guides through competence, capability and the learning to do things the “RIGHT WAY”. Her peers learned to trust her judgment and skills and deferred to her wisdom. These traits continued to develop and would serve her in a career in maternity nursing.
She attended Potternewton Lane, Primary School, until age 11, then Leeds Secondary School and then Stonebridge Lane Secondary Modern in Liverpool. After highschool she went into the Student Nursing program at Leeds General Infirmary, the very hospital she was born in 18 years earlier.
It was here were Pat trained as a midwife. She had fond memories of riding her bicycle and delivering babies. Whereas in Canada she preferred to work in maternity wards.
Soon after graduating nursing, she and a friend ventured to Canada, making a home in a 4 bed hospital in Cassiar, B.C. where she was required to do everything in the hospital. After a short time there, she met a dapper and charming, Edward H. MacDonald, who would become her partner, co-conspirator and love of her life!
Together they would move to Lloydminister, Kitimat, Vancouver and eventually settling in Victoria, where they bought a home at the end of Daffodil Avenue. By then they had established a world reknowned kennel, Valona, that bred champion dachshunds. Pat worked at the Victoria General Hospital and directly facilitated the birth of innumerable babies.
Pat also travelled the world, either by herself or with Ed. She ventured to places like, Egypt, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, NZ, UK, France and only once to Smithers, BC, to visit her mother-in-law.
Pat was an exceptionally intelligent lady and did not suffer fools. She had a very dry, often dark sense of humour, which she mostly kept under wraps – mostly. She enjoyed babies, young mothers, nursing, regular lunches with her Nursing colleagues, the
M & Ms. She really loved beating her brother Brian at the Saturday Telegraph Crossword Puzzle.
She and Ed camped all over the U.S. & Canada, often showing their prized dachschunds. Pat made an indelible impression on all those who met her. She was direct and honest. Her leadership won her many admirers and her friends are very loyal.
She will be missed by everyone but no one moreso than her husband, Ed, who has lost the love of his life.
