Passed in peace on Friday, January 15, 2021 after a long battle with dementia at the age of 87. Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jack in 2014. Shirley was born in Vancouver on August 19, 1933 to Cecil and Sarah Tudge. She grew up in East Vancouver, graduating from Templeton High School in 1950. Many happy summer days were spent with friends and family on Bowen Island.
On June 27, 1958 Shirley married John (Jack) Mitchell. They built a home in Burnaby, where they lived for 30 years and raised their family. Shirley was the loving mother of Sarah (Paul), John (Heidi), Heather (Richard) and Andrew (Christine). She instilled strong values into her children that have served them well in life. She was the proud and devoted grandmother to Eric, Jennifer (Brendan), Joshua, Anna, Connor and Kelsey.
Shirley lived a full life, supporting her family was most important for her. Growing up she enjoyed dancing, tennis and playing the piano. She began piping as a teen, joining the Vancouver Ladies Pipeband and eventually became the Pipe Major of the Band. While busy raising four children, Shirley remained active with teaching and judging highland dancing. She worked for many years as retirement brought a move to Victoria, the building of a new home and extensive travel around the world with Jack.
Shirley will be fondly remembered by nieces, nephews and friends in Canada, the US and Scotland.
Mom will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
There will be a celebration of life when permitted by Covid protocols.
