1935 – 2017
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sylvia Hogeboom on Friday, January 27th at the age of 81 years.
Sylvia was born in Washington, County Durham, England on April 29th, 1935. She immigrated to Canada in 1959 but returned to England only to immigrate back to Canada again in 1977.
Sylvia was a very organized and hard worker. She put herself through night school in England in order to get her secretarial training. She then worked as a secretary in England prior to her immigration. Once in Canada she embarked on a career as a legal secretary working for the Calgary law firm of MacKimmie Matthews for a number of years after which she moved on to work in the law department of Gulf Canada from where she retired in the early 1990s. In 1995 she moved to Victoria, BC to be near her son.
Sylvia was a long-standing friend of Bill W and would have celebrated 33 years in June in the fellowship. She devoted herself entirely to this fellowship and many have benefited from having known Sylvia and being mentored and loved by her. A favourite quote of hers was: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift to enjoy.” She was also an avid blood donor over the years and was the very proud recipient of the Red Cross Gold Card for having donated blood more than 100 times.
Sylvia leaves to mourn her passing, her son, Paul Pierce of Victoria, her brother, Thomas Smith of England and her many friends she kept in close contact with. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Trevor Pierce in 2004, her parents, Thomas Smith in 1937 and Catherine (Ashmore) Smith in 1994, aunts, uncles and cousins.
It was Sylvia’s wish that there be no funeral or memorial service. Donations in memory of Sylvia can be made to the British Columbia Schizophrenic Society or to the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
