How to describe a man known by so many names, by so many? Clarence, Juney, Bubba, Atzy, CG was a talker, story-teller, jokester, dancer, piano player, prevaricator, cusser, malapropism king, entertainer, hard-worker, charmer/disarmer, son, brother, husband, dad, uncle, nephew, cousin & friend. Family & friends were very important to him, & he was beloved by all. A 4th generation Victorian, born 7/22/31 in Victoria, to Alice Schlein & Clarence Gustav Atzenhoffer,Sr. He attended St Joseph’s & graduated Class of 1948. As a child of depression years, his job was to wake every morning at 3am, get on his pony, Dynamite, & bring in the family business’ dairy cattle for milking. After the milk was bottled, he ran behind his dad’s truck, delivering to customer porches. Then he walked with his sister, Patty Jean, from the Green’s Addition, across the Guadalupe river bridge, to Nazareth Academy, then on to STJ. He even played football after school! His strong work ethic was established very early on! He received an Associate Degree from Victoria College. He served during the Korean War(1951-53) in the US Army Reserve in Spokane,WA & Portland,OR as Corporal:Airman 2nd class in the early warning radar unit. He worked in a mincemeat factory to make extra money & hated it, but loved Portland! His interview is recorded on koreanwarlegacy.org. He returned home to work w/his dad in the trucking business. He met Nancy Daunis on a Halloween blind date on which they sat on the roof & threw water balloons at trick-or-treaters! 6 months later they were engaged, 6 months after that, married 9/16/56 (for 56 yrs before her death 6/12/13). 9months after marriage, daughter, Alice Jeannine was born & 1 1/2yrs later, son William Jay was born. Shortly after Jeannine’s birth, Bubba went 2 work at Dupont. He took early retirement as yard master at age 59 & continued his hard work& love of ranching & rental business. Bubba was involved in multi community activities thru the years. He was a Knights of Columbus member for many years. A member of St Mary’s & then Our Lady of Victory, where he was lector & usher. He was founding member & President of Victoria Horseman’s Club. He & Nancy spent many summers taking their kids to rodeos & pony shows. He was an excellent marksman & avid deer hunter.
He formed life-long friendships w/Hondo & Lincoln hunters & especially with his son, coming full circle in the teacher/caregiver roles. He was a founding member of SFOA-serving as high school football & basketball official. He was very involved with his kids’ 4-H club activities & events-making floats, designing life-size demonstration horse cutouts & sampling food projects. Travel was always an adventure with Bubba, as it usually involved running out of gas, flat tires, breaking down or getting lost. Mexico, Lajitas, England, Nova Scotia, New Orleans,CA & Fredericksburg would provide many laughs for years after. In later years, he served as commander of the local chapter of the Korean War Vets. He lived at Brookdale/Greatwood the last yrs of his life, enjoying dominoes, bingo & happy hours & being taken care of! He is survived by 1 grandchild, John Atzenhoffer, who he loved & had high hopes for. Sadly, his last 5 months were spent in 7 hospitals & rehabs, battling congestive heart failure, pneumonia, bronchitis, and 2 coronaviruses! He was the 1st death, at age 88, in Victoria Co from Covid-19, on 4/10/20. A lifelong Catholic, he died on Good Friday & is being buried 8/15/20 on the Feast of the Assumption.
