

He was a graduate of Alamo Heights High School, Westmoreland Jr. College in San Antonio, Texas A & I University in Kingsville and Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marie Sims Mooney; daughter, Yvonne Mooney Babbitt (Art) of Corpus Christi; son, Ern Mooney Jr. (Liz) of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Erica Haycock (Garrett), Ern “ Trey” Mooney III , (Shauna); Sean Mooney (Jennifer); great grandchildren, Carter Haycock and Tyler Haycock and brother, Jack (Peggy) Mooney of Tyler.
Ern was in family practice from 1946-1979. He was the first Chief of Staff at Citizens Hospital in 1956, and was a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association and Academy of Family Medicine. He was on honorary staff of Citizens and DeTar Hospitals and was active in Lion’s Club for 63 years, as well as American Legion. During his extended yearly visits to Colorado, Dr. Mooney volunteered many hours in the medical field and was chosen as one of nine Colorado volunteers for the “Nine Who Care” Award sponsored by an ABC television in Denver in 1994. Dr. Mooney was also recipient of the Jefferson Award in Washington, DC in 1995 for volunteerism.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Rosewood Funeral Chapels. Funeral services will be Monday, November 18, 2013, at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kathryn Morton officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council.
Pallbearers will be Chris Sims, Kevin Sims, Scott Stuart, Matt Kapsner, Milton Greeson and Bruce Bauknight.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust, Victoria, TX 77901, First Presbyterian Church, 2408 Navarro, Victoria, TX 77901 or Victoria College Foundation (Allied Health Programs Scholarship), 2200 E. Red River, Victoria, Texas, 77901.
