On June 13, 2015, at the age of 101, the world lost a true Renaissance Woman, Genevieve Sturgis Goodpasture. She was born on October 14, 1913, to Benjamin and Ammie Evandice Sturgis in El Paso, Texas, and was reared in Houston, Texas. There she met and married the love of her life, Burl Erwin Goodpasture, and there was born their only child, Charlotte. They moved to Corpus Christi where as an ardent music lover she taught piano. After moving to Victoria in the early 1960s, she followed her love of music to join the Victoria Music Club where she served as president for two terms. In 1974, she joined the Victoria Symphony as a founding board member, followed by membership in the Victoria Symphony Guild. She joined the Bronte Club in 1967 where she served as president for two terms, and currently held Emeritus Membership. Genevieve was an active member of the Victoria County Historical Society. As an accredited genealogist, she taught genealogy research at University of Houston at Victoria. She was immersed in countless community endeavors and gave graciously of her time, energy, and talents. In 1995, she was elected South Texas Woman of the Year, and was photographed with then Governor George W. Bush.
Genevieve loved to swim, travel, cook and entertain and always served her guests stylishly and elegantly in the manner of Emily Post. She exuded kindness, love and generosity to all who knew her. Many fondly referred to her as Mama G, Aunt G, and GG.
Following a long bout with Alzheimer's, Genevieve leaves us to celebrate her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Burl Erwin Goodpasture, her daughter, Charlotte Hydrick, and her sister, Madeline Butler. She is survived by her son-in-law, Beau Hydrick (Judy); grandsons: James Conrad Hydrick (Debbie) and Thomas Erwin Hydrick (Paulette); great grandson: Bryan James Hydrick (Lisa), and great-great grandson: Skyler Jordan Hydrick; nieces: Sharon Dotson (John) and Genevieve Coogan (Marcelo); nephew: Michael Mark Butler; and numerous grand and great nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to her friends who offered help with this memorial, especially Carole Oliphant of Victoria.
A celebration of Genevieve Goodpasture's life will be held Monday, July, 6, 2015, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
