Jimmie Lee McGhee

Jimmie McGhee was born Jimmie Lee Bolch in Kent County, Texas on June 10, 1923. She graduated from Jayton High School and attended Wayland Baptist College where she was on the varsity basketball team. She married John Albert McGhee in Lubbock, Texas, on June 12, 1949. She moved to Victoria, Texas following her marriage.

She joined the women’s sorority Beta Sigma Phi when she was 23 years old. A member for 69 years, she held every office and was active in the community. She worked for the Victoria Independent School District for more than 25 years, retiring in 2000 as the Assistant Director of Transportation. She was a long-time member of Baptist Temple.

She was a wonderful mother, who thought having her children and their friends in her house, having fun, was far more important than a clean house. She kept an open door policy for friends and family. She believed that education was the most important thing she could give her family, as well as loving, consistent discipline. However, she believed that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were perfect and should be completely indulged. She passed on her love of reading, old movies and family history.

She loved travel and enjoyed trips overseas and in the U.S. with good friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, John (“Johnnie”) Albert McGhee, her parents Lola Mae Johnston & William Hubert Bolch, and her brother William H. Bolch Jr.

She is survived by her two children, Cathy Buchanan and Mike McGhee, her two granddaughters, Lee Erin and Kristin, and two great-grandchildren, Ailie Catherine and Kyla Jimmie.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 am on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 am at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Rev. J. V. Helms officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
