Mark Harold Crater of Victoria passed from his earthly life on August 24, 2018. He entered his earthly journey on December 14, 1961 at Warwick, NY as the oldest child of Harold and Wendy (Walton) Crater. On November 25, 1982 Mark joined Nona Lynn Faust in holy matrimony at Oxford, MS. Both Mark and Nona received teaching degrees from Delta State University in Mississippi and taught mathematics at Victoria East High School until their recent retirements. Earlier, Mark had taught math at Yorktown High School.
In addition to his wife, Nona, and his parents, Mark leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Dana Wise (Michael) of Refugio, TX, Rebecca Crater and Mark Harold, Jr. both of Victoria. Also mourning his passing are his brother, Wayne Crater (Marie) and sister, Dorothy Crater, both of Victoria and grandchildren Kristen Henning (Taylor) and Mallory Wise. Mark’s great-grandchild, Jaxon Henning, recently celebrated his first birthday.
Mark’s intellectual gifts, particularly in mathematics, were apparent early in life as he received a National Merit Scholarship upon graduation from Oxford (MS) High School. He experienced great satisfaction in teaching high school math and enjoyed family get-togethers for which he was often the chief cook. In quiet hours Mark enjoyed listening to music; notably from his collection of blues records. He was deeply committed to the Victoria community as a member of Christ the Victor Lutheran Church and as captain of a Knowledge Bowl team sponsored by the Victoria Democrats Club. At Mark’s request, a memorial service will be held at Christ the Victor Church, 202 Stanly St. in Victoria on Saturday, September 1, at 11:00 a.m. For those wishing to do so, memorials in Mark Crater’s name can be mailed to Christ’s Kitchen at P.O. Box 3391, Victoria, TX 77903. Arrangements are under the direction of Rosewood Funeral Chapel, 361-573-4546.
