Sister Marietta Hajdik, 86, passed away March 16, 2018. She was born December 29, 1931 in Sealy, TX to the late Louis and Emily (Orsak) Hajdik. She was the second of seven children – four girls and three boys. Her sister, Sister Carola, followed her into the IWBS Congregation. She attended Public schools and Immaculate Conception School in Sealy and graduated from Nazareth Academy. She entered the postulancy at Nazareth Convent on Nov. 27, 1949; received the habit on Sept. 3, 1950; pronounced her first vows on Sept. 4, 1951. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio and a Master of Education, majoring in educational administration from Southwest Texas State University.
Sister Marietta’s years of ministry included serving as Principal and/or teacher at St. Michael School in Weimar, Sacred Heart School in La Grange, St. Agnes School and Blessed Sacrament School in San Antonio, St. Ludmila Academy and St. Paul High School in Shiner, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma, Our Lady of Victory School and Nazareth Academy in Victoria, and Sacred Heart School in Hallettsville. She assisted in parish ministry at St. Leo’s Church in San Antonio and served as Director of Religious Education and the RCIA program at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ganado for 18 years. During her later years she served as Director of the Sisters in the Annual Vows program. Her kind, gentle and peaceful spirit were a constant inspiration.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Henry Jurecek.
She is survived by her sisters, Helen Jurecek, Clara (Steve) Kubena, Sister Carola Hajdik; brothers, Bernard (Vivian) Hajdik, Louis (Barbara) Hajdik, Eugene (Mary) Hajdik and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
On Monday, March 19, 2018 at Incarnate Word Convent, a Visitation and Scriptural Rosary will be held at 3:00 pm followed by a Wake Service with Evening Praise and Sharing of Memories at 6:30 pm. On Tuesday, March 20, 2018, the Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am at Incarnate Word Convent with Bishop Brendan Cahill as the presider and Father Phi Nguyen as homilist. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery No. 3.
