Born on December 28, 1930 in Starkville, Mississippi to Arthur Gregory Sr. and Doddie B Harris, he was one of six children. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Starkville, Mississippi. In his adult life he continued his faith at Galilee Baptist Church in Gary, Indiana. He was loved and supported by his church and was a faithful member.
He received his formal education at Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana and attended Indiana University Northwest for two years. He honorably served in the United States Armed Forces. After which he was employed at Sears and retired from Bethlehem Steel Mill after working as a steel worker for decades.
On August 5, 2000 he was united in Holy Matrimony to his lovely wife, Willie Lee, whom which he shared nearly two decades of life, love, and adventure.
He enjoyed poetry, jazz, and politics. He could be found humming or whistling along to any little melody and had a voice that brought you joy. James also loved engaging in political discourse and debate, discussing the current state of the union and reminiscing on events of the past. He was an avid reader and poetry enthusiast, enjoying the works of Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and W.E.B DuBois. He will be best remembered for his quick wit, stubborn will, and enlightening demeanor.
He was preceded in death by his father Arthur Gregory Sr., mother Doddie B Harris, brothers Arthur Jr. Gregory, George Gregory, Chester Sr. Gregory and Michael Gregory, son Caesar Gregory Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his loving wife Willie Lee, his children Leonard Gregory, Ronald Gregory and Joyce Harris, extended children, Darryl Lackey, Darrick Lackey, Diana Sterling, and Wanda Pollard, his brother, Russel Gregory, extended grandchildren Andrew Pollard, Jeremy Pollard, Jasmine Pollard, Danielle Sterling, Dominique Sterling, and Dana Sterling, and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren.
