Jim was born to Rutheford P. and Edna (VanHook) Hayes on June 14, 1952, in Barstow, CA.
Enlisting in the Airforce in 1972, he rose to the rank of Sargent and honorably discharged in May 1975. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from CalPoly Pomona, where he met and married the love of his life Kim K. West on December 1978. They established their home and family in the High Desert of southern California. He retired after 25 years from the San Bernardino County Assessor’s office.
Model trains were Jim’s passion. To the extent that he needed to build a three-car garage to house his train layout. Jim enjoyed ‘wheeling and dealing’, buying and selling properties and cars. He had a grumpy zest for life, enjoying cruises to Hawaii, the Caribbean, Alaska, and a trip to Croatia.
Jim was so frugal “he could squeeze a buffalo nickel till the buffalo screamed”, which is why it was such an amazing surprise when he took his wife, with the complete package, to Disney World for their 35th anniversary.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kim; children James Adam Hayes and Helen Evangelene Hayes; four grandchildren: Mason, Dweyr, Isabelle, and Alana; his brother David Hayes, sister Carol (Hayes) Allen and their families.
He will be dearly missed and always remembered by his family and friends.
Family requests that no flowers be sent.
