

Virginia Beach- Dudley Wiley Batten, 87, passed away on July 26, 2011. A native of Smithfield, VA, he was the loving husband of the late Mary Reasor Batten. He was the eldest son of the late Dudley L. and Lottie G. Batten. Mr. Batten was a retired business owner and a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Gaye Makin and her husband Rob of Virginia Beach; two sons, Jeffrey Batten and wife Beth of Virginia Beach, VA; and Wayne Batten of Loudon County, VA; one brother, Hosea Carroll Batten of Marietta, GA.; three granddaughters, Laura Batten of Pennsylvania, Jill Batten of North Carolina; and Kathryn Makin of Virginia Beach; and one great granddaughter, Adrianna Shantzer of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Batten is remembered for his commitment and faith to God and the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, where he served faithfully for more than forty years. Mr. Batten was a graduate of the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company Apprentice Program and a Merchant Marine during World War II. His dedication to serving God and speaking to others about their faith was his calling. He was a fine Christian husband, father and businessman.
A funeral will be conducted on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 2:00 pm in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462, by Dr. Dan Goff. Interment will follow immediately after at St. Luke’s Cemetery, Smithfield, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, July 30, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The family would like to express appreciation for all the prayers and visits Mr. Batten received and to the doctors and staff at Lake Taylor Nursing Home.
