Eugene Foster Utley, aged 89, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023, in Portland, Oregon. Born on July 14, 1934, in Richmond, Virginia, Eugene led a life marked by dedication to music, education, and family.
Eugene's educational odyssey began at Washington Adventist University, continued through the Catholic University of America, spanned across the Atlantic to the Royal College of Music in London, and reached its zenith with a PhD in Music Education, Conducting, and Musicology from Indiana University in 1970. His passion for music and education led him to a rewarding career with the Norfolk Public Schools system, where he taught music for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.
Eugene leaves behind his beloved husband, Alex Oxford; his devoted sons, Craig and Douglas Utley; his former wife, Kitty Utley; his siblings, brother James Utley and sister Betty Utley; and his cherished grandchildren, Caleb Beard, Cypress, Cai, and Chloe Utley.
An accomplished trumpet player, Eugene's love for music was only matched by his love for travel and his eagerness to share his knowledge with others. He was a mentor to many, inspiring his students to pursue their passions with the same fervor he did.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Emotions Anonymous, in Eugene's memory at https://emotionsanonymous.org/donate/memorial-gifts.html
