John was born in Newark, NJ on September 24, 1948 to Frank and Margaret Martino, residing in Wantaugh, NY. He was a loyal big brother to sisters Pat (Dave) Ford and Joyce (Bobby) Schaffer, a role he treasured well into adulthood. John graduated from Wantaugh High School and relocated to Virginia Beach in 1976 with his wife, Jeanette Spinelli Martino. He was a gifted builder in his career, leading departments and project teams. Later, he enjoyed doing quality control at design firm Clark Nexsen. His family fondly recalls local projects to which he contributed. John also loved to build at home and was the first real “DIY weekend warrior” on endless home renovations and projects. In business and in life, he was known for his playful, fun-loving, joking personality.
Ever the fighter, John was the recipient of a heart and kidney transplant in 2012. He never took this for granted, and often told his family that when it came to his marriage, he was the “lucky one.” His heart was filled with love for his devoted wife of 49 years, Jeanette. He also felt tremendous pride for his sons, Frank (Becky) Martino and Nick (Amber) Martino.
Most of all, John adored being the “Poppy” half of the much-loved duo, “Bammy and Poppy”. John was “Poppy” not only to his grandchildren but also to numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Being Poppy to all extended family and friends alike was his fondest role. His grandchildren Maggie, Ceci, Tommy, Janie, and Evie will always remember the magic Poppy brought, whether it was doling out gifts as Santa at Christmas or returning from a trip to the store with penny candy from his childhood.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Ascension, Roman Catholic Church, Virginia Beach on Thursday, June 8th at 12:00pm Noon. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:30am, prior to Mass, with a light reception following the funeral in the Church Community Center. If you wish to honor John’s memory with a gift, contributions may be made to LifeNet Health.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.smithandwilliamskempsville.com for the Martino family.
