

Born of the late Ollis E and Frances Virginia Mansfield on November 9, 1918 in Princess Anne County, Ray lived in the Norfolk area for over 70 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen S. Mansfield, and two sisters, Mildred Montgomery and Jane Brennan.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Winifred E Mansfield and her wonderful family: Roberta and Walter Crawford, Janet and Rev Keith Moore, Revs Frances and Robert Cooper, 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his niece, Linda Ray Hartman and great nephew Monty Sharp.
Ray was a graduate of Maury High School Class of 1938. He worked with his father in construction and cabinet making until he was called to serve an apprenticeship at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. In the Army Air Force, he served as a specialist in the Training Aids Department and then was transferred to the Naval Air Rework Facility in 1950, wherein he was the only patternmaker employed. After 30 years of service and retirement, he went to college, earning a Doctorate in Industrial Technology and a Master’s in Nutrition. He was also a part- time picture framer for over 50 years.
Ray was a member of Azalea Baptist Church in Norfolk where he was a teacher in the Pankey Bible Class and a Deacon Emeritus. He was a member of Toastmaster International for 30 years and was selected as the Toastmaster of the Year in 1979-80. Ray was also a member of Masonic Lodge No 232 and a past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
A Celebration of Dr. Ray Mansfield’s life will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, January 7, 2013 at Azalea Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA. The family will receive condolences following the Memorial Service at a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall. The family wishes donations to be made to Azalea Baptist Church Building Fund, 3314 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, VA 23518.
