

Thurman dedicated his life to service and craftsmanship. He proudly served in the Marine Corps Reserves for 38 years, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO4). His commitment to his country was further exemplified by his service in the Gulf War, where he had the honor of serving alongside his son. Following his distinguished military career, Thurman applied his skills and passion for precision as a Laboratory Instrument Maker Supervisor at Old Dominion University. For 30 years, he contributed to the academic community before retiring from this esteemed position. In his later years, he found joy and camaraderie as a Marshal at the Virginia Beach National Golf Course.
Thurman was a man of many talents and interests. He was an avid woodworker, often found tinkering and fixing things around the house. His love for sports was evident in his unwavering support for the Washington Redskins, a team he cheered for with great enthusiasm. A man of deep faith, Thurman was an Elder at Kempsville Presbyterian Church, where he served his community with dedication and humility. His life was a testament to his devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, roles he cherished above all else.
Thurman was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Thurman Gardner and Harriett Jeter; stepfather Charles Jeter; and his devoted wife of 59 years, Claudia Gardner. He is survived by his five children, Karen Grubaugh (Rick), Timothy “Bob” Gardner, Keith Gardner, Scott Gardner (Rebecca) and Kellie Jennings (Chip); grandchildren, Jordan, Josh, Joanna, Robert, Michael, Sara, Nicole, Richard and Mikenzy, as well as several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A public visitation for Thurman will be held Monday, August 25, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kemp, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, August 26, 2025 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23502.
His legacy of love, service, and craftsmanship will be remembered by all who knew him.
