Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, companion, friend and entrepreneur, Gordon Lloyd Pendegraft passed away on December 26, 2019 at Kaweah Delta Medical Center due to a heart attack – he was 86 years old.
Born in Fresno November 27, 1933 to Lloyd and Winona Pendegraft, he moved to Visalia at the age of 12 and attended Sierra Vista Junior High and graduated from Visalia Union High in 1952. He then attended and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1956. He was married to Joy Olsen in the Stanford church in 1956 and moved back to Visalia to work for the family business known as Lloyd Plumbing Supply Co. The business sold to Hajoca Corp. in 1975 and he worked as regional manager covering Visalia, Southern California, Utah, and Arizona operations. In 1982 he departed Hajoca and with two business partners opened Visalia Pipe and Supply Inc, and shortly thereafter opened GP Norton Co. in Merced and in Fresno. In 1994 Hajoca purchased the three locations and Gordon managed them until his retirement in 1996.
Gordon was Exalted Ruler of the Visalia Elks Lodge in 1965, President of the Visalia Rotary Club in 1976, and belonged to the Visalia Country Club since 1957. He was active in St. Paul’s Anglican Church since he moved to Visalia, was on the Visalia Community Bank Board of Directors for many years, and was a Heritage Club member of the Kaweah Delta Hospital Foundation.
Fond memories of backpacking trips in the Sierras, sweeping the tennis court for tennis matches, brutal games of Monopoly and cribbage, his battle with the Gravely riding lawnmower – which would never start – and then riding it with beer in hand (always beer and lemonade), his lists and the smell of his pipe will linger.
He is survived by his 5 children: son Karl Pendegraft and his wife Trish, son Eric Pendegraft and his wife Berit Haugen, daughter Marthe Aston and her husband Stuart Aston, daughter Signa Pendegraft, son Gus Pendegraft and partner Rebecca Cleaves; 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren; Evelyn Shaver, his loving companion since 1983; and Evelyn’s 4 children: Susan Flammer, Tom Shaver, Scott Shaver, Nancy Carpenter. He will be sorely missed.
Viewing will be at Miller Memorial Chapel Friday, January 10, 2020 from 3pm-7pm. Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, January 11 at Visalia Presbyterian Church. Graveside is at 11am at Visalia District Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Anglican Church Endowment Fund or Kaweah Delta Hospital Foundation. Condolences may be sent to the family at 3130 W Howard Ave, Visalia, CA 93277.
