James Monroe Neeley

James Monroe Neeley was born in Van Buren, Arkansas, on September 27, 1924 to William George Neeley and Mary Amanda Jones Neeley. He was the eighth of ten children born to the Neeley family. While attending public grammar and high schools in Strathmore, California, James worked odd jobs in order to support his widowed mother and her household following his father’s death.

James enlisted in the Navy in 1943 where he served his county as Pharmacist’s Mate during World War II in the Pacific Campaign. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he completed his high school education and worked as a medic for Walt Disney’s production of the movie So Dear To My Heart.

Upon his return from military service, James met his future wife, Dorothy Elaine Kame. They were married on July 3, 1947 at Dorothy’s parent’s home in Visalia, California. They built their own home on her family’s property and took up residency there in 1949. This residence has remained their home for 68 years.

James retired as a sales representative for Gerber Products Company where he worked for over 20 years. He was a well-loved by colleagues and family, enjoying laughter and lively fellowship together. He didn’t know a stranger, but quickly warmed up to new acquaintances making them feel at home in his presence. James was a member St. Paul’s Anglican Church for 63 years serving in many capacities as a lay leader.

James Monroe Neeley is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Dorothy, and his children and their spouses: Dahne and Roger Watson, James K. and Melissa Neeley, and Peter Neeley. His legacy lives on in his grandchildren and their spouses and his great-grandchildren: Janessa, Bryce, Bradford, Grayson and Brent Iden; Darlene, Marcel, Tarrick, Kendall and Jayda Walker; James T. and Amanda Neeley; and David Watson.

James went to be with his Savior on Monday, April 3, 2017. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 10 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul’s Anglican Church located at 120 North Hall Street in Visalia, California.
