Mary Jean Bruxvoort was born to Gilbert and Verda Mae (Sinkey) Bruxvoort on July 12, 1948 at Moline, Michigan. She grew up in Michigan, Iowa and California with her parents, four brothers (Harlan, Preston, Darrell, Robert) and one sister (Marjorie).
Mary graduated from Valley Christian High School and Cerritos Junior College after which she was employed at Artesia Hospital where she worked in the billing department for many years. It was in 1970 that she married Allen Wybenga. He passed away unexpectedly in the second year of their marriage.
Mary married Ken Vellema in 1974. They resided in Lakewood, California later moving to Woodlake, California in 1990-1991 to be close to family. They owned numerous citrus ranches in Tulare County. Mary was very involved in the operation with Ken. She knew the rules and regulations of organic growing, irrigation, pesticides, permits etc. Whenever she was asked, “now what was that again Mary?” the answer just rolled off her tongue. She was very knowledgeable!!
Mary helped out at Trinity United Reformed Church by taking part in the Prison Ministries program for twenty two years. This involved writing letters to and answering questions from the inmates. She also babysat weekly for women’s Bible Study groups and other events when needed.
She loved caring for her kitty cats and always had at least ten all with crazy names! If you needed a kitty (or three) you could call Mary!! Many of her favorite things included playing piano, board games, cards, puzzles and going out to lunch with friends.
She loved her husband Ken and his children Shelly, Scotty and Lisa. She also loved their grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In 2022, Mary was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune disease that affected her in many negative ways. She went to be with her Heavenly Father on September 6, 2023. Mary will be greatly missed by all who loved her, yet we rejoice that she is in the gentle and loving arms of our Savior.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Pastor Roets, Charlie Van Der Kooi and each of you for your prayers and support during this time of sorrow in the passing of our loving Mary.
